Inspiring Impact

A green background with a white eye looking at the earth.

Since December 2021, The Datai Langkawi has achieved its inaugural zero waste to landfill milestone, a testament to its ongoing dedication to waste management.

By March 2024, an impressive 98% of solid waste had undergone on-site processing, resulting in the diversion of over 50 tons of waste from landfills. This achievement underscores The Datai Langkawi's sustained commitment to waste diversion, with an average annual rate of 94%.

In total, 365,642 kg of waste has been diverted from landfills, marking a significant environmental impact. Key facilities established to support this initiative include the Pure Centre, the central hub for waste processing and management, the Upcycling Centre, dedicated to repurposing waste materials, and Organic Wealth, which focuses on organic waste management and composting.

In 2020, The Datai Langkawi embarked on efforts to restore fragmented forests, reforest areas, protect wildlife habitats, and engage in educational and community outreach initiatives.

By 2023, the Native Tree Nursery had been expanded to accommodate 3,015 trees from 19 species. Additionally, 2,730 trees were planted with the participation of staff and guests.

An official partnership was forged with GAIA, a wildlife conservation social enterprise in Malaysia.

Since 2019, The Datai Langkawi has prioritised coral regeneration, marine life propagation, and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices within the community.

Noteworthy achievements include the deployment of five artificial reefs at Datai Bay and the installation of 20 turtle-friendly lights to enhance nesting success during the turtle nesting season.

Guests are actively involved in coral planting and fragmentation activities, resulting in the planting of 369 corals between 2023 and 2024. Collaborating with MareCet, an organisation dedicated to marine mammal conservation, further strengthens The Datai Langkawi's marine conservation efforts.

In 2018, The Datai Langkawi installed a glass water bottling plant on the property, eliminating the use of plastic water bottles throughout the hotel.

To conserve energy and water, the resorthas implemented various measures, including installing low/dual flush toilets, low flow taps, and showers.

Guests are encouraged to participate in carbon-offset initiatives such as tree planting, reef care, and zero waste programs. Additionally, the hotel promotes a Green Linen and Towel Program, provides Datai Beach Bags in every room to encourage reusable bags, and offers coral and tree adoption activities.

Comprehensive recycling and waste management systems are in place, including an upcycling system that converts hard plastic waste into coasters and glass waste into figurines and ornaments. The Asher, a green technology system, further contributes to waste reduction efforts by processing waste into ashes.

The Datai Langkawi ensures that all suppliers and partners adhere to sustainable practices, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship. Monthly benchmarking reports are conducted to monitor and track performance on waste, energy, water, and sustainability financing, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement in their sustainability journey.

The Datai Langkawi through The Datai Pledge collaborates with The Kanshalife Project, a social venture situated in Langkawi, to further its zero-waste initiatives. Through this partnership, the resort aims not only to reduce waste but also to empower the local community and promote economic growth.

The collaboration between The Datai Pledge and The Kanshalife Project encompasses various projects and programs. For instance, The Kanshalife Project manufactures virgin coconut oil for sale at The Lab. Additionally, they recycle candles used in resort operations, contributing to waste reduction efforts, and conduct various community outreach programs.

Furthermore, The Datai Pledge provides financial support for The Kanshalife Project's core recycling and upcycling initiatives. Additionally, discarded items used in resort operations are for these activities, providing employment opportunities to 5-7 beneficiaries from the local community.

In line with its commitment to supporting local artisans and artists, the resort invites them in-house for activities and sells their merchandise.

The Datai Pledge's ‘Pure For The Future’ Initiative, which includes the establishment of the Pure Centre, Upcycling Centre, and Organic Wealth, has yielded significant results. Additionally, the hotel sources food supplies locally, supporting the livelihoods of local fishermen, farmers, and communities.
