Regenerative Luxury Travel, DESIGNED AROUND You

Regenerative Luxury is travel that gives more back than it takes.

It seamlessly combines exceptional experiences and refined comfort with a commitment to helping destinations thrive by protecting nature, preserving culture, and ensuring tourism income directly supports the local economy.

At its heart, regenerative luxury travel is about creating meaningful journeys that leave a positive legacy, helping people, places, and nature thrive long after the trip has ended.

Regenerative luxury Travel Rooted in Expertise

"With over 25 years’ experience in global luxury travel and hospitality, I’ve seen how often the focus sits on beautiful hotels and seamless service, while less attention is given to where money goes and what impact is left behind in the places we visit.

Over time, that gap has become impossible for me to ignore.

A’ARU exists because I believe travel should feel just as good in its impact as it does in the experience itself — more accountable, more transparent, and more connected to place and people.

The aim is simple: to curate exceptional travel that delivers comfort and quality, while also creating genuine, measurable positive benefit."

The A’ARU Ethical Selection Framework: Rigorous Auditing for Real Impact

Every property featured by A'ARU is personally reviewed by me against a detailed assessment framework based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rather than expecting hotels to address all 17 goals, we focus on the areas most relevant to their destination and operation.

This might include supporting local communities and livelihoods, protecting natural ecosystems, or preserving cultural heritage. Crucially, all claims must be supported by evidence, data or documented outcomes before a property is considered for inclusion.

What we look for:

  • Measurable impact, not just good intentions.
  • Evidence that tourism revenue benefits local people and businesses.
  • Transparency through data, reports, partnerships or documented outcomes.
  • A genuine connection to local culture, heritage and place.

What may disqualify a property:

  • Sustainability claims without evidence.
  • Reliance on marketing messages or future promises.
  • Limited benefit to local communities or economies.
  • Lack of transparency around environmental or social impact.

At A'ARU, regenerative operations must be demonstrated through measurable action and proven results.

 What is Regenerative LUXURY Travel?

Regenerative luxury travel goes beyond simply reducing harm.

It focuses on leaving destinations better than they were before by supporting communities, protecting natural environments, and preserving cultural heritage. While sustainable travel aims to minimise negative impacts, regeneration actively contributes to the long-term wellbeing of people and place.

At A'ARU, we believe luxury and regeneration are naturally connected; the future of luxury lies in a deeper connection to place, culture, and purpose. This means choosing locally owned businesses, supporting conservation, and ensuring more tourism revenue remains within the destination.

A wonderful example is Fogo Island Inn, where profits are reinvested into the community through the Shorefast Foundation, supporting economic resilience and local livelihoods. Here, guests enjoy world-class hospitality while directly contributing to the long-term future of the island.

For travellers, this offers a meaningful shift from a conventional luxury holiday. Alongside refined comfort and personalised service, you can expect greater transparency, deeper cultural connections, and opportunities to engage with experiences that create genuine value. The result is travel that feels richer and ultimately more rewarding for both guest and host.

Impact Story:

Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland, Canada

Following the collapse of the cod fishing industry, many residents of Fogo Island faced economic uncertainty and declining opportunities.

Fogo Island Inn was created as part of a wider effort to help secure the island's future through community-led economic development.

Owned by the Shorefast Foundation, the inn reinvests its operating surplus into initiatives that support local businesses, entrepreneurship, skills development and cultural preservation.

Local residents benefit through employment, supplier partnerships and new economic opportunities, while visitors experience a destination that has retained its identity and sense of place.

"I selected Fogo Island Inn because its impact is measurable, transparent and deeply rooted in the community. The property demonstrates how luxury tourism can help strengthen a local economy while preserving the culture and character that make the destination unique." Kelly Forbes

Impact Story:

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, Matera, Italy

For decades, many of Matera's historic cave dwellings stood abandoned, and traditional building skills were at risk of being lost.

Sextantio helped reverse that decline by restoring the ancient sassi while preserving their original character and cultural significance.

The project has supported local artisans, craftspeople, producers and small businesses, creating employment and helping to revive pride in Matera's heritage.

Visitors benefit from an authentic connection to the destination, while the local community benefits from renewed economic activity and the preservation of cultural traditions that might otherwise have disappeared.

"I selected Sextantio because it provides clear evidence of cultural and economic regeneration. Rather than simply restoring buildings, it has helped revitalise a community, safeguard local heritage and demonstrate how tourism can create lasting value for residents as well as guests." Kelly Forbes

frequently Asked Regenerative travel questions

  • What is Regenerative Luxury Travel?

Regenerative luxury travel goes beyond reducing harm. It aims to leave places better than before by supporting local communities, protecting nature and strengthening local economies. A key part of this is ensuring more of the money spent on travel stays within the destination, benefiting local people and businesses. That is why A’ARU is highly selective, focusing on independent properties or those that can clearly show their local impact. Guests still enjoy exceptional comfort and service, while knowing their journey contributes positively to people and place.

  • What is the difference between Regenerative and Sustainable Travel?

Sustainable travel focuses on reducing negative impacts, such as lowering emissions, cutting waste, conserving resources and offsetting where possible. It is mainly about doing less harm. Regenerative travel goes further by actively improving the places we visit. This can include restoring nature, supporting conservation, strengthening local communities and preserving culture. Many A’ARU properties also invite guests to take part in these initiatives, creating a more connected and meaningful experience. In simple terms, sustainable travel reduces impact, while regenerative travel creates positive change.

  • How does A’ARU vet its properties for regenerative credentials?

Every property is hand-selected for its sense of place, individuality and commitment to positive impact. Before joining A’ARU, each hotel completes a detailed application aligned to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. We ask how they contribute to the goals most relevant to their location, from conservation to community support and cultural preservation. We also require evidence and measurable impact, not just intentions. Alongside this, we review partnerships, operations, certifications and impact reporting to ensure actions are real, not just claims.

  • What certifications do A’ARU properties hold?

Some properties hold recognised certifications such as EarthCheck, Green Globe, B Corp and other regional standards. These can indicate a commitment to more responsible practices. However, certification is only one part of our assessment. Many schemes focus on policies and compliance rather than real impact, and some highly regenerative properties choose not to certify because they already go beyond these frameworks. At A’ARU, we place equal or greater importance on measurable impact, community partnerships and environmental outcomes to ensure genuine, meaningful progress.

  • Where does A’ARU operate?

A’ARU works with carefully selected properties and experiences across a growing number of destinations worldwide. Our collection focuses on places where luxury travel can create meaningful benefits for local communities, cultural heritage and natural environments. From remote wilderness lodges and conservation-focused retreats to locally owned boutique hotels, we seek partners that share our commitment to regenerative tourism. As our network continues to grow, we remain focused on quality, authenticity and positive impact rather than scale alone.

  • How do I start planning a regenerative Luxury Journey?

Planning a regenerative luxury journey begins with a conversation. We take time to understand your interests, travel style and the kind of impact you want your trip to have. From there, we recommend destinations, hotels and experiences that reflect your values while still offering exceptional comfort and service. Whether you are drawn to nature, culture, wellness or adventure, we create journeys that are thoughtful, personal and enriching, designed to leave a positive impact on the places you visit.

  • Do I have to sacrifice luxury to travel regeneratively?

Not at all. Luxury and positive impact can go hand in hand. Our collection includes properties offering exceptional comfort, service, food and experiences, while also supporting local communities and the environment. Regenerative travel is not about giving things up, but about making more thoughtful choices across your journey, including how you travel. Guests can still enjoy privacy, comfort and high-quality service throughout, including flights and transfers, while knowing their trip is contributing more positively to the places they visit.
