Inspiring Impact

As Baba Dioum wisely stated, "In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught".

This sentiment underscores the vital importance of education in nurturing a generation of marine stewards who are dedicated to protecting our oceans on both local and global scales.

Laamu’s Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) team provide a range of immersive experiences designed to educate and inspire guests about marine conservation. From daily guided snorkels to marine science presentations and tours of their state-of-the art marine science and research center, the Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL), every activity serves as an opportunity to cultivate a deeper connection with the marine environment. Their commitment to inclusivity ensures that guests of all ages and experience levels can engage with the wonders of the ocean, fostering a sense of empowerment and stewardship among each individual.

Laamu’s efforts extend beyond the resort to the wider community through initiatives such as the Laamafaru Festival and the Hello Hallu school program. By engaging with local schools and students, they aim to instill a sense of responsibility and passion for marine conservation from a young age. Through these educational programs and experiences, Laamu strive to empower the next generation of marine biologists and conservationists in the Maldives, ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans.

Through strategic partnerships with renowned organizations like Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation, and Olive Ridley Project, Six Senses Laamu has spearheaded the Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) to protect marine ecosystems through research, education, and community involvement.

The dedicated team at MUI conducts extensive research on various marine habitats, from coral reefs to manta rays, fostering a deeper understanding of our underwater world. Initiatives like the #ProtectMaldivesSeagrass campaign have garnered widespread support, leading to the protection of seagrass meadows across multiple resorts. Collaborative projects, such as the development of a groundbreaking underwater ultrasound scanner, have enabled the capture of unprecedented images of pregnant manta rays, pushing the boundaries of marine science.

In recognition of their outstanding efforts, Laamu atoll was designated as a Mission Blue Hope Spot in 2022, a testament to the team's relentless dedication to marine conservation. Through a commitment to education and community engagement, Six Senses Laamu is not just a resort but a hub for nurturing marine stewards and safeguarding our environment for future generations. With a steadfast focus on sustainability and innovation, Six Senses Laamu continues to pave the way for responsible tourism and ocean protection worldwide.

Committed to combating climate change, Six Senses Laamu’s entire operation is built on sustainable principles. The resort tracks and reports using 139 Sustainable Performance Indicators which are recorded monthly in a Sustainability Action Plan with time-bound improvement targets.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions are at the core of their environmental commitment. By 2030, their aim is to curtail these emissions by a striking 46% from the benchmark set in 2019. An integral stride towards this goal has been the initiation of their renewables voyage. In 2021, the installation of solar panels heralded a pivotal moment, harnessing sun-kissed energy to fulfill 15% of their energy requirements.

The Maldives’ waste management poses a significant challenge, exacerbated by the islands' remote locations and limited infrastructure.

Laamu’s approach to this pressing issue involves a comprehensive strategy focused on waste reduction, segregation, and partnering with third-party waste management companies to work towards achieving "Zero Waste" to landfill. Emphasizing sustainability, guest operations and amenities are designed to be single-use plastic-free, featuring plant-based items and refillable shower products.

At the heart of the resort’s sustainability efforts lies the Earth Lab, a hub dedicated to transform ‘waste to wealth’ through recycling, upcycling, and repurposing materials. This innovative centre engages in diverse processes such as paper recycling, glass cutting and crushing, composting, and fermentation using effective microorganisms.
